We heard an excellent talk given by Prof. Tim Mowl on Pleasure and the Jacobean Garden yesterday – very entertaining, very knowledgeable and very useful for our research into Campden House and gardens.
After the talk, we all went on a tour round the ‘estate’ and into the church. Tim was enthusiastic about the Noel monument, but less so about the Hicks one, which he said isn’t good enough to be by Nicholas Stone. Never mind, he did say that the two Lodges were very rare and made a number of suggestions about the gardens, some of which were heartily disagreed with by Helen and Vanessa! We are all now gripped by images of two-dimensional strapwork!!
And you know the bit of the remaining house that has puzzled us – ? Tim sounded quite definite that the piece of wall at an odd angle to the window recess was a flue which would have curved round to a central fireplace.
